Holiday Lighting Events

 

  • ZooLights, is the National Zoo's first holiday light show, with animated displays of the zoo's most popular animals; entertainment, zookeeper talks and snacks!  $10, with younger than 2 free.  Wednesday-Sunday from 6:00 - 8:30 through Dec. 30.
  • The 21st annual Winter Festival of Lights, with more than 2.5 miles of holiday figures created with more than a million lights, is open nightly at Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro.  $5 per car or van; Dec. 25 is free.  Open nightly from 5 - 9:30 through Jan. 1.
  • Lights on the Bay, a two-mile route through more than 70 animated scenes, is open nightly through Jan. 1 at Sandy Point State Park near Annapolis.  $12 per car; $15 includes two pairs of 3-D glasses.  Open nightly from 5 - 10 though Jan. 1.  The event benefits the Anne Arundel Medical Center.
  • Garden of Lights, Nov. 17-Jan. 6, 2008.  Brookside Gardens, Wheaton, MD.  More than 650,000 miniature twinkling lights individually formed into shapes of flowers and animals.  301-962-1453.  www.brooksidegardens.org.
  • 12th Annual Winter Lights Festival, Nov. 23 - Dec. 30.  Seneca Creek State Park, Germantown, MD.  Winter Lights features more than 400 illuminated vignettes and 65 animated displays in a 3.5 mile drive through beautiful Seneca Creek State Park. Theme areas include Winter Woods, Teddy Bear Land, Victorian Village, North Pole, Toyland, and Penguin Cove.  301-258-6350, www.gaithersburgmd.gov/winterlights.
  • The Bull Run Festival of Lights is a 2.5 mile drive among illuminated displays.  Open through Jan. 7 at Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville.  Admission is $20 per car Fri-Sun; $15 Mon - Thur.  Open nightly from 5 - 9:30.
  • The 14th annual Symphony of Lights is a 1.4 mile drive among more than 75 giant light sculptures.  Open nightly in Columbia, Md through Jan. 5.  Admission is $20 per car.  The show is a fundraiser for Howard County General Hospital.
  • 100 Miles of Lights, Nov. 23 - Jan. 1, 2008.  Thousands of twinkling lights light up the sky from Richmond to the Atlantic Ocean.  Richmond, Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.  888-493-7386, www.newport-news.org.
  • The annual Festival of Lights at the Mormon Temple in Kensington, Md includes outdoor light displays, a live Nativity scene, international Nativity sets and concerts by local entertainers at 7 and 8 pm.  Free.  Open nightly from 5:30 to 10:30 from Nov. 30 though Jan. 1
  • Mount Vernon by Candlelight.  Tour candlelit Mount Vernon, including the rarely seen third floor. Nov. 25, Dec. 2, 9. 703-780-2000, www.MountVernon.org.
  • State House by Candlelight, Dec. 1-2.  Tour the Maryland State House in Annapolis trimmed in its holiday finest, State Circle, Annapolis.  410-974-3400
  • Christmas at Longwood Gardens,  Kennett Square, PA.  Nov. 22 - Jan. 6.  Each year as many as 200,000 visitors enjoy the twinkling wonderland created by Longwood's outdoor holiday light displays.
